Innovative handheld device/handpiece plus a special attachment for purifying tissues and/or implants, in particular with a lavage function for a multimodal, active mechanical, physical and chemical purification of implants and tissues.

Bacterial infection of tissue, joints and endoprostheses is one of the most serious complications in surgical treatment. Untreated, it can lead to the death of the patient via infection in the bloodstream. The treatment is often difficult and prolonged, especially if the bacteria are located in the surrounding tissue or in the bone bed of an endoprosthesis.
Even without an inserted endoprosthesis, a serious infection of the tissue and long bones can occur, e.g., infection that has been washed into the body via the bloodstream. This can result in a chronic tissue inflammation or a so-called osteomyelitis an infection of the bone marrow. Various treatment strategies have been established. In most cases, infected tissue and parts of the bone are removed, antiseptic lavage is performed, and local antibiotics are applied to the area with only limited success in most cases.

The solutions currently available on the market work only with simple pressure, similar to a high-pressure cleaner (jet lavage), and are used to flush out residues produced during bone surgery, such as the insertion of an artificial hip joint, gently but effectively, in order to avoid complications following the operation and to accelerate healing.

For this purpose, a pulsating jet of a fluid is generated by the lavage system. The fluid is usually sterile water or an aqueous solution that also contains pharmaceutically active substances. The lavage system extracts the rinsing water containing the residues. A combined application of mechanical, physical and chemical methods for the reduction of microbial load in infected bone, joint and soft tissue infections is missing so far. A device for dissolving fresh biofilm on endoprosthesis surfaces also does not yet exist.


The present invention has the goal of purifying infected tissue by mechanical, physical and chemical processes. The mechanical component first removes the pathogens on the tissue or bone. At the same time, the application of ultrasound breaks up the biofilm, if present, and kills the pathogens by cavitation effects. A further reduction in the bacterial load is achieved by introducing UVC light into the lavage solution.

By using antiseptic rinsing solutions, the ultrasound penetrates the joint more efficiently, while at the same time flushing released pathogens out of the tissue or eliminating them on site through the antiseptic effect. In addition, the present device has a handpiece in which there is an axial turbine integrated in the suction channel, which rotates an adapted brush body via a friction clutch.

Furthermore, the handpiece has connections for the flushing/suction power as well as a plug-in coupling for the flushing/suction brushes and a combined LCD digital/analog display for the display of the volume flow, pressure, temperature as well as the dynamic viscosity of the lavage exudate, which are detected by means of a magnetic-inductive or ultrasonic flow sensor and are located in/at the suction power or in/at the suction channel.
